Sacred Resistance

The Sacred Resistance team educates, organizes and empowers the Foundry community for advocacy and public witness addressing various social justice issues we are facing at both the local and national levels. We work with community partners, including Washington Interfaith Network, The Way Home Campaign, and Congregation Action Network.

As Christians we are commanded to love our neighbor, and love is an active verb. Our call to action is rooted in our United Methodist baptismal vow “to resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever form they present themselves” and in the biblical admonition for people of faith to seek justice and join movements of liberation. We are nurtured by God’s sustaining strength and endurance in resisting injustice. We engage in planned events and rapid response. We provide educational opportunities for the Foundry community to learn, as well as opportunities for advocacy and action at the local and national level.

Join Foundry’s Public Policy Advocacy & Public Witness:

  • Witness

    Be present, show up.
This might be a rally, lobby day, candidate forum, or protest. When we are called to action, it is to stand with marginalized neighbors demanding change. We need people to show up in large numbers, so that civic and corporate leaders are urged to listen and act. Sign up to receive invitations to advocacy and public witness opportunities.

  • Listen

    Build bridges in the community.
Listen to and walk with the marginalized, develop relationships with allies, and conduct behind-the-scenes research.

  • Organize

Work with the Sacred Resistance planning team or be a liaison with community partners.
Help plan or lead education events or advocacy actions for Foundry. Build relationships. Relay information from community partners. Go deeper and learn historically-proven methods of community organizing to keep Foundry on the move.

What is Sacred Resistance?

Some have understood “Sacred Resistance” as operating from a defensive posture. This is understandable, as the framework was initially used at Foundry as a response to racist, xenophobic, misogynist, anti-immigrant and other anti-“the least of these” polices and practices. But Sacred Resistance includes all of that and is so much more. Sacred resistance is an orientation towards living in a way that embodies God’s love and justice.
